He is officially considered the first president of the University of Michigan.〔The University of Michigan was established by the Michigan state constitution in 1837, and was governed directly by a Board of Regents until the office of President of the University was created by a constitutional convention in 1850. The modern University of Michigan now traces its founding date to 1817, when its precursor the University of Michigania was established, but the president of that institution, Rev.
